Alabama

In Alabama, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. In 2015 Senate Bill 326 was on the way to getting passed until Senator Jabo Waggoner, head of Senate Rules Committee, blocked the bill from further progressing saying it was a bad legislation ‘that we don’t need in Alabama.’

ARIZONA

In Arizona, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2010. In 2016 Proposition 205 was proposed to legalize the recreational use of cannabis and it failed with 48.7% of the vote.

ARKANSAS

In Arkansas, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug from medicinal use since 2016. The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act was put up for a referendum in 2012 and failed to get passed. However, amendments were made to the bill in 2016 and it was passed into legislation.

CALIFORNIA

In California, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for recreational and medicinal use. In 1996 California voters passed Proposition 215 which made California first State to allow for the medicinal use of cannabis. Recreational Marijuana was made legal under Proposition 64 which was passed in 2016. These laws came into act as of January 2018.

COLORADO

In Alabama, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for recreational and medicinal use in 2012. In 2000 voters in Colorado approved Amendment 20 which allowed patients to use medical marijuana as long as they had written consent. Then in 2012, Colorado Amendment 64 was passed which legalized the recreational use of marijuana in Colorado.

DELAWARE

In Delaware, State Legislature has allowed the use of marijuana for medical purposes since 2011. In June 2015 Governor Jack Markell signed legislation decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana. Delaware almost legalized recreational marijuana in 2018 but the bill didn’t pass the state house.

GEORGIA

In Georgia, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. Several attempts to expand access to medical cannabis have been met with widespread resistance from politicians and have ultimately failed.

IDAHO

In Idaho, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. A bill was passed to legalize CBD in 2015 but this was vetoed by governor Butch Otto.

INDIANA

In Indiana, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. In 2015 bills were introduced both in the House and in the Senate to legalize medical marijuana for certain patients with severe conditions but it did not get through the house and the senate.

KANSAS

In Kansas, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. 10 Sheriffs from Kansas filed a lawsuit against neighboring Colorado saying that the state’s legalization of cannabis was placing an undue burden on law enforcement in their state.

LOUISIANA

In Louisiana, cannabis is legal for medicinal use and has been since 1978. However recreational Cannabis remains illegal in the state. In 2015 Governor Jindal signed a bill, which set up a framework for dispensing medical marijuana.

MARYLAND

In Maryland, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2012. In 2017, after 5 years of delay Maryland’s medical marijuana program became operational and sales began.

MICHIGAN

In Michigan, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for recreational and medicinal use since 2018. Michigan legalized medicinal cannabis in 2008 by popular vote making them the 13th State to legalize medicinal cannabis. Michigan voted to legalize marijuana on November 6th 2018.

MISSISSIPPI

In Mississippi, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. Mississippi small amounts are decriminalized in the sense that you will not be jailed for your first offence but it is still a misdemeanour.

NEVADA

In Nevada, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for recreational and medicinal use since 2017. Nevada legalized medicinal marijuana in 2000 and was available to licensed individuals shortly after. In 2016 recreational marijuana was legalized by ballot and this law came into act as of January 1st, 2017.

NEW JERSEY

In New Jersey, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2010. Outgoing governor Jon Corzine signed the Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act permitting the use of medical marijuana for people with certain illnesses. New Jersey is expected to legalize recreational marijuana in early 2019.

NEW YORK

In New York, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2014. Andrew Cuomo the governor of New York also outlined in his 2019 agenda, that he planned to push the legalization of recreational marijuana in 2019.

NORTH DAKOTA

In North Dakota, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2016 and in May 2018 the first two manufacturing facilities opened. North Dakota residents failed to legalize recreational marijuana in the 2018 midterms as 59% of people were not in favor of legalization.

OKLAHOMA

In Oklahoma, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2018.

PENNSYLVANIA

In Pennsylvania, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2016. Governor Tom Wolf legalized medicinal so that patients and families could benefit from this treatment. A number of cities within Pennsylvania such as Pittsburgh and have also decriminalized marijuana.

SOUTH CAROLINA

In South Carolina, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2014. In June 2014, Republican governor Nikki Haley signed into law Senate Bill 1035. The law allows children with severe epilepsy to be treated with CBD oil if recommended by a doctor.

TENNESSEE

In Tennessee, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. Tennessee has a very strict policy on marijuana where possession of even small amounts is a misdemeanor.

UTAH

In Utah,, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2018. The governor Gary Herbert signed the bill into law on the same day causing it to go into immediate effect.

VIRGINIA
In Virginia, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. Even the possession of small amounts of cannabis in Virginia is a criminal offense.

Connecticut

In Connecticut, State Legislature has enacted laws decriminalizing marijuana as well as legalizing the drug for medicinal use in 2012. Governor Malloy decriminalized marijuana in 2011 and the following year he signed the medical marijuana law after it was passed in the Senate.

FLORIDA

In Florida, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2016. There was previously an attempt to legalize medical marijuana in 2014 but the vote failed to receive the 60% that is required for constitutional amendments in Florida. Recreational marijuana is still illegal in Florida.

HAWAII

In Hawaii, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2000. However the first legal sale of medical marijuana was made in 2016 nearly two decades after it was legalized.

ILLINOIS

In Illinois, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2013. Illinois was the 20th state to legalize the use of medicinal marijuana when governor Patrick Quinn signed into law the state’s medical marijuana program.

IOWA

In Iowa, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. There have been two previous attempts to decriminalize marijuana in Iowa one in the 1970s and one in 2014. These both failed and marijuana remains illegal in Iowa today.

KENTUCKY

In Kentucky, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. In 2015, two bills were put forward to legalize the medicinal use of marijuana. The anti-cannabis National Marijuana Initiative and the Kentucky Baptist Convention took credit for the failure of these bills and vowed to make a stand against all future medical marijuana bills.

MAINE

In Maine, State Legislature has allowed the use of marijuana for medical purposes since 2016. The state’s first medical marijuana bill was passed in 1999. Recreational marijuana was legalized in 2016 and the Marijuana Legalization Act was taken into affect within 40 days of November 8th.

MASSACHUSETTS

In Massachusetts, State Legislature has allowed the use of marijuana for medical and recreational  purposes since 2016. In 2008 marijuana was decriminalized by Massachusetts voters. Massachusetts legalized medicinal marijuana in 2012 and became the 18th state in the country to legalize it for medicinal purposes. In 2016 Governor Charlie Baker was strongly against marijuana legalization but it was still legalized by popular vote.

MINNESOTA

In Minnesota, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2014. Governor Mark Dayton legalized the use of medical marijuana for treatment of patients with nine severe diseases.

MISSOURI

In Missouri, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2018. In 2014 marijuana was decriminalized. Missouri became the 31st state to legalize medical marijuana in 2018. Within this law there is a 4% sales tax on marijuana that will fund healthcare and support for veterans.

NEBRASKA

In Nebraska, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. However, these laws are not as strict as other states as possession of small amounts is seen as a civil infraction.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

In New Hampshire, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2013. In 2014 a bill based on Colorado’s Amendment 64 failed to pass. New Hampshire decriminalized weed in 2017.

NEW MEXICO

In Nevada, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2007. Senator Bill Richardson signed it into law, it remains a criminal offense if not being used for medicinal purposes.

NORTH CAROLINA

In North Carolina, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. An attempted medical marijuana bill that was introduced in 2014 was killed by the house. Additionally, the topic of medical marijuana bills was blocked from considering bills for the next two years.

OHIO

In Oklahoma, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2016. These laws didn’t come into action until 2017. However, Marijuana has been decriminalized in Ohio since 1975.

VERMONT

In Vermont, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for recreational and medicinal use since 2018. Governor James Douglas legalized medical marijuana in 2004. In 2018 Vermont legalized the use of recreational marijuana.

WYOMING


In Wyoming, cannabis is illegal for all purposes. Wyoming has some of the strictest cannabis laws in America. There have been two previous attempts to legalize cannabis in Wyoming in 2016 & 2017 and both of these attempts failed.

WASHINGTON DC


In Washington DC, State Legislature has enacted laws legalizing the drug for medicinal use since 2014, but it is barred from commercial sale. Medical marijuana was legalized in 1998 and recreational marijuana was legalized late in 2014 and came into effect in 2015.
